'Green' Eggs

Simple and beautiful non-toxic Easter eggs that are fun to make with easy to find ingredients.

TIPS

  • Boil your white eggs first and refrigerate until ready to use.  Pre boiled eggs are easier to peel and saves time.

  • The longer you soak your eggs the more vibrant the colors but eggs left to soak overnight won't be good to eat

  • For added fun draw shapes with crayons prior to dyeing or use rubber bands for a tie-dyed effect, removing bands after eggs are dyed and dried



HOW TO MAKE YOUR DIE

1. You'll need white vinegar and your coloring material. Choose your colors and ingredients, you can mix various ingredients together or just use one thing to create shades you like. Remember that shades will appear lighter on your eggs. For coloring materials you can choose from:


  • Blue: frozen or fresh blueberries, shredded purple cabbage, grape juice

  • Orange: chili powder, yellow onion skins, carrot juice or shredded carrots

  • Gold/Yellow: turmeric, chamomile tea, lemon peels

  • Green: frozen or fresh spinach leaves, liquid chlorophyll

  • Purple: hibiscus tea, red wine, purple onion skins

  • Red: beet juice, shredded beet, cranberry juice or cranberries, pomegranate, cherries, red onion skins, red wine

2. Bring 2 cups water to a rolling boil.


3. Add coloring plant materials. Add around 2-3 handfuls of coloring agent or 2-3 TBS spice, Make sure water covers the coloring material completely with at least an inch of water on top.


4. Reduce heat and simmer for 30 minutes or longer for a deeper


5. Strain liquid into a large to tall mason jar or glasses, and allow to cool to room temperature, 2-3 hours.


6. Stir in 2 tablespoons white vinegar and add as many hard-boiled eggs as will fit in each jar.


7. Leave eggs out in dye for up to 2 hours to dye or until you get the desired color. Refrigerate if you want to leave them in overnight or until the egg is the desired color or you can leave out if you don't plan to eat the eggs.


8. Rub dried eggs with a dab of vegetable oil if you like them to shine.
